How to Prevent Your Instagram from Being Hacked (Before It Actually Happens)

Instagram isn't just another social media network; it is you, your digital business card, and perhaps even your money-making machine. Naturally, Instagram has become the subject of multiple attacks, phishing scams, and hijacking accounts.

But there’s one catch: nearly all of them are preventable with the implementation of basic security precautions.

Here are some no-nonsense ways to protect yourself from hackers on Instagram in 2026.

What Makes Instagram Accounts Vulnerable to Hacker Attacks

Hacking doesn't happen because hackers are “geniuses.”  Usually, the cause of an attack lies somewhere else such as weak and predictable passwords, fraudulent websites pretending to be a promotion or phishing emails, the use of unsafe third-party apps, lack of two-factor authentication on your profile, or compromised email addresses associated with your account

As soon as one link is broken, the whole chain collapses.

Step 1: Select a Strong, Unique Password (Avoid Using Names of Your Pets)

Password strength is vital because this is the primary line of defense that can be easily overcome.

Best practices to follow:  Select passwords ranging from 12 to 16 characters, include alphanumeric combinations, update passwords periodically, and avoid using personal data when creating passwords.

Tip: Make sure to use password managers that generate passwords automatically.

Remember how your front door lock works? Will you secure it with a paper clip? Surely not, right? Then, why would you even consider using it while logging into your online accounts?

Step 2: Activate Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) ASAP

If your password ever becomes exposed, 2FA ensures that nobody hacks into your online profile.

How does two-factor authentication work?

After logging into Instagram, your account will require an extra verification process, which can be achieved through an authenticator application (the best choice) or SMS authentication code.

Two-factor authentication will guarantee that nobody else can access your profile despite obtaining your login credentials. We recommend Google Authenticator as a reliable option to protect your account.

Tip: Authenticator apps offer better security against hackers who employ SIM swap tactics.

Step 3: Secure Your Email Account (Secretly Compromised Account)

Instagram security is directly proportional to email security. If someone hacks your email account, they will be able to hack your Instagram password, take full control over your Instagram profile, and lock you out of your Instagram profile.

Be sure to immediately activate 2FA for your email account (Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, etc.), change your email account password, and delete any old and unused email recovery method accounts.

Don’t forget about the fact that your email account serves as the “master key” for all online accounts!

Step 4: Remove Suspicious Third-Party Apps

Given that you are an Instagram creator, you most probably have connected many applications for tracking analytics, managing posts, applying filters, and organizing giveaways.

Here’s the problem - most of these apps always remain signed in!

What are you going to do now? First, open your Instagram profile, then tap on “Settings,” tap on “Apps & Websites,” and remove suspicious third-party accounts.

Step 5: Avoid Getting Hooked by Phishing Messages (Creator Trap #1

Most modern Instagram hacks don’t “hack” your account; rather, they lure you to click.

Some include- “Unable to use your Instagram,” “A wonderful opportunity to collaborate with brands,” or even a fake Instagram login page asking you to “verify” your account

Rule of thumb: If the message sounds threatening to you or is something that sounds “too good to be true,” do not click on it.

Verify yourself by signing in to Instagram from the Instagram app itself.

Step 6: Turn on Login Alerts & Monitor Activities on Your Account

You can monitor the activities of your Instagram account in place of login, the device used for login, or location of login.

Once you notice anything suspicious, log out of your account, change your password, and activate two-factor authentication.

How to Prevent Being Hacked on Instagram

It is not a one-time activity; you must develop a habit.

Every month or every two months, change your password, update connected apps, check your login history, and clean up old permissions.

Responsible creators will not just be able to protect their account but also their whole brand, reputation, and income.

Someone does not become a hacker’s target on Instagram simply because of being lazy the first time; it’s because they have never been protected at all.

Here are three ways that you can use to make yourself safer than 90% of all other Instagram users:

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication

  • Secure your Email

  • Clean up third-party apps
